A Special Invitation

Regular listeners/readers of My Two Cents know that I am helping facilitate Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University at Community Church in Oshkosh this winter. Tonight (Monday), the topic will be getting out of debt--and staying out of debt. The church is inviting FPU members to bring friends to this meeting--and I am extending the same invitation to my listeners/readers.

Tonight, you will learn about how debt affects your life--by keeping you from achieving all of your goals, by causing you to live in fear and by preventing you from making maximum use of the revenue that you will generate throughout your life.

You will also learn about Dave's proven methods for paying off debt. It won't be a get out of debt quickly presentation. You won't learn how to get a new social security number, how to bankrupt all your debt or how to get some kind of government help to bail you out. You won't be sold a debt consolidation loan or a software that "magically" helps you pay off your debts sooner than making the minimum payments.

You will learn how to take responsibility for the promises you made--and how to pay off each and every last cent that you owe. My wife and I have done it. Some of our friends and co-workers have done it--and you can do it too.

In addition, you will likely see some people take the steps necessary to avoid going back into debt. I have a feeling that more than a few credit cards will meet their overdue demises tonight--perhaps in some very creative ways.

So again, I invite you to join us for Financial Peace University at Community Church on Ryf Road in Oshkosh tonight for a discussion on getting--and staying--out of debt. It's free and you don't even have to talk to anyone. The presentation starts at 6:00 sharp and runs about two hours. Afterwards, there will be a social event with treats (my wife made brownies!!) in their cafe. You can also talk with the folks at the church about possibly joining their next session of FPU.

Now if I could just get our Congressional delegation and the entire State Legislature to show up.......

  1. Well, thank you Jonathon, but I've never been STUPID enought to GET in debt. Actions have consequences, and greedy impatient childish jerks get what they deserve.

  2. I have never paid a penny of credit card interest in my life. I have taken out loans on vehicles, but am currently debt free in that department. My only debt is my house.

If you can't afford it, don't buy it. The entire notion of throwing away credit cards isn't all it's cracked up to be. CCs can help with renting a car, and establishing credit before you can buy a house or take out a car loan. But if you abuse them, they will abuse you. Just use some common sense.

Wait a minute. Did I just say common sense?

  3. In addition to credit cards, keep an eye on your bank. If your bank is charging you excessive fees, shop around. Many home town banks and credit unions will give you a better deal. Good customers deserve good service.

  4. Jon,

The topic of getting out of debt is a good one. Another topic should be "how not to get into debt". Either way, I hope members of our Council, King and Tower specifically, and members of our School Board, Bowen, Weedenhoff, Lemburger, and McDermott specifically should attend!!!

  5. They wouldn't let the liberal school board in the door. Because they would corrupt all the great work Dave Ramsey is doing.

They would have to go to Bernie Madoff's seminar on excess and unrestraint and how to pull the wool over the people's eyes!

  6. If Burke Tower went to the seminar he would need "more information" afterward.

  7. HMMMMMM, liberals at a financial seminar. Wouldn't that be kind of like prostitutes at a sexually transmitted disease seminar??? Ain't no-one gunna learn anything!!

  8. You people are so freaking rude. Governments are always going to be in debt. That's why they "tax and spend." If they didn't tax you wouldn't have services provided. If things didn't keep going up they wouldn't have to tax you more. It's comical how you people will continually bitch about your tax dollars going up to pay for increases in things the govenrment provides, like intangibles, but I bet you don't whine to the cable company for raising prices, the Packers for raising ticket prices, or the cost of cigarettes, beer or your other goodies goes up. Grow up and pay your fair share for the services you're getting just like everybody else.

  9. 4:51, thank you for providing your liberal input, now please pay your $5.00 fee for contributing your useless contribution.

  10. I don't mind at all paying taxes for LEGITIMATE services, what I hate is spending it foolishly. I'm sure many fellow taxpayers agree with me.

  11. 8:44, examples of what you think is foolish, please.

  12. 10:36. Let us start with spending $750,000+ for a parking lot.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hmm, what is a reasonable price for a parking lot?

  14. 7:36 PM is the useless one. The only comment they seem capable of making are ones that attack other posters for their views. On the other hand they are incapable of even defending their rudeness by pointing out where they thought the one poster was wrong. I agree with some who might think waste is wrong. Nothing points to greater waste than the seed that was wasted on posters like 7:36. (Since you're so cheap, 7:36 I figured you would appreciate my two cents instead of the requested $5 fee.)

  15. 5:15 AM, don't even bother. The whole mindset in this burg is that the government should provide EVERYthing people want at absolutely no cost. Education, roads, jobs, etc., but GOD FORBID the knuckle-walking illiterate drunken Neanderthals in their cheeseheads should have to PAY for it! The irony is that if THAT isn't the definition of SOCIALISM -- wanting something for nothing -- I don't know what is! And yet these yammering yahoos insist they are "conservative"! I don't know why they worry so about taxes, anyhow -- when you're earning minimum wage at Mickey D's and living in Mom & Dad's basement, how high are your taxes?

  16. Some liberal on this blog asked what is foolish and someone responded by offering a 750k parking lot.

How about 90 sick days for school district administrators?
How about the 10's of thousand spent on consultants to produce plans to build a school on Ryf rd.?
How about paying 95% of the school district retirees health insurance?
How about several million to renovate the convention center?

    Foolish or responsible?

    ReplyDelete
  17. How about $1,500,000 for the grand opera house, how about $3,500,000 for the convention center?

    Enough examples yet liberals?

    ReplyDelete
  18. You may think these things are foolish. Others obviously think they're necessary. Enough of an explanation for you dim-witted cheapskates?

  19. 3:59, are your feelings hurt because someone called you for what you are, a liberal?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'd be pissed too if someone called me a liberal. I can feel 3:59's pain!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Feel the paiun? Ha! You are a pain.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hey 10:18, what's "Feel the paiun" I know liberals are a bit trigger happy, but please aim before you shoot next time.

  23. What a great resource!
